Jubilee Arts presents “Oh Freedom,” a vocal recital of African American Songs by Leroy Smith.

Although the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution established America's freedom from the rule of the British and declared all Americans equal, Africans in America for years struggled to attain simple rights and true freedom. rough slavery and the ght for civil rights, music played an essential role in providing hope, empowerment and even a means of communication.

Join us on Sunday, July 10, 2011 from 3pm to 4pm to pay tribute to those who fought for freedom and be inspired by the music that fueled movements. Jubilee Arts instructor and Sandtown community resident, Leroy Smith will provide several musical selections that are sure to entertain and inspire.

Leroy Smith, 21, has been performing for eighteen years, singing a diverse repertoire which includes concert spirituals, arias, art songs, vocal jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, rock, fusion, musical theater, and popular music. Some of his most noted performances include appearances with Grammy Award Winning Artists like Yolanda Adams, Michael McDonald, and Craig Jessop, former conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and appearances with season two American Idol winner Ruben Studdard for Christmas in Washington with the attendance of former United States of America President George Bush Jr. and his wife Laura Bush. ese performances were a part of his choral experience with the Baltimore City College Choir, under the direction of Linda R. Hall. Currrently, Leroy is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Education from Gettysburg College. In the Spring of 2012, he will be attending McDaniel College to receive a Masters of Arts and Technology degree with teacher certification in Prek-12 music. Leroy is a Sandtown community resident and instructor at Jubilee Arts.
